Art Nouveau Paste Butterfly Brooch Gold-Filled c. 1890
Art Nouveau Paste Butterfly Brooch Gold-Filled c. 1890
What a great piece! Made circa 1890, this brooch depicts a stylized gold-filled butterfly set with closed back green pastes in the body and wings, with two little pink pastes for the eyes. While not stamped as such, this beautiful Art Nouveau brooch has serious French leanings and reminds me so much of photographs I've seen of amazing Art Nouveau buildings that have long since been torn down. Why can't everything be Art Nouveau?! What a world that would be!
Measures 2 3/8 x 1 1/2".
Not stamped or signed. Light wear to gold-fill on reverse and on edges. Many pastes have darkened over time as they are closed back. Pin back in excellent working condition.
