Large Jugendstil Locket 800 Silver, Germany c. 1890
I love this GORGEOUS locket! Made in Germany circa late 1800's, this is designed in the Bohemian Art Nouveau style of the area called Jugendstil. A sprig of ivy climbs asymmetrically up this locket, set within two dotted frames in 800 sterling silver, the German standard. In Victorian jewelry, an ivy motif signifies fidelity, so this was no doubt a romantic gift of the period. Engraved on the back with initials and there is definitely an "S" in there but the other letters morph into each other in such a way that I can't quite make out the rest. This locket is big, measuring 2 3/4" length including the bail. Absolutely lovely!
Stamped "800" and tested for metal content.
Measures 2 3/4 x 1 3/4".
Come with 16" vintage sterling silver chain.
In very good antique condition. Locket opens well and closes tightly. As it is a very large front, you need to line it up straight when closing.
