Victorian Butterfly and Bird Feather Reversible Pendant Sterling c. 1890
I've had one of these at the store before but never as beautifully done and with a surprise--it is reversible! This pendant is one of those incredible hand-made pieces from the turn of the century. One one side it features an actual butterfly (sorry butterfly) against a backdrop of Morpho butterfly wing, a genus that is known for its iridescent blue color. Often these antique pieces have deterioration to the butterfly wing, but this one is in excellent condition.
Then there is the reverse, where we find a wonderfully depicted bird--I'm not sure what kind of bird this is but is very specifically done so I'm sure someone knows--crafted in bird feather, set against a mother of pearl background with hand-painted foliage (and bird legs!). Just a really special piece, very sweet and interesting to look at and wear!
This piece measures a sizeable 1.25" in diameter. Elements are set in a sterling silver bezel under glass, which is in very good condition. Pendant comes on a vintage 16" sterling silver chain, but this can be changed out for a longer length if desired.
